Office for the iPad

Microsoft released Office for the iPad this past week, and a quick survey of some of our members has yielded, no surprise, mixed reviews. First, the complaints: massive app size – 200MB per application is seriously bloated. Can you open documents to view? We haven’t received a consistent answer to this.

It’s worth mentioning this brought back one complaint we’ve heard before, and that’s the move from a license purchase to an annual subscription basis, which we’ve seen many major software companies migrate to.

What’s your experience with Office for the iPad been? Any bugs, or hidden features you’ve encountered? LEt us know!

New iPads announced

An iPad Air and a new iPad Mini were announced at an Apple presentation on October 22. Both have the newer Retina display, and the iPad Air has had a dramatic drop in weight, to one pound.
Both include the A7 processor and feature a lighter, thinner design.

SPEAK TEXT

Your iPhone or iPad can read to you. Enabling the Speak option makes it possible for your iOS device to read aloud any selectable text. Launch the Settings app, tap on General, and then choose Accessibility. Scroll down to Speak Selection, and tap to turn it on.

Now, go into any app where you can highlight text. Your options include Mail, Safari, Notes, and many others. Select some text, and you’ll see a new option appear in the contextual menu (you may have to tap the right arrow to view more options). Tap the Speak command, and your iOS device will start reading the text aloud.

After he unveiled the iPad at a San Francisco conference center in early 2010, the late Steve Jobs spent a few minutes asking people holding the device for the first time what they thought of it. A reporter suggested it might make consumers forget why they needed a laptop computer. Jobs shrugged his shoulders and said, coyly, “We’ll see.” Jobs was a master not just at anticipating paradigm shifts but creating them. If tablets eventually did eclipse the laptop and desktop businesses, Jobs was determined that Apple (AAPL) would reap the windfall.
